NOTE: Estimates of the median household income for Montgomery County are made annually. These annual estimates are benchmarked to the U.S. Decennial Census years or to the Census Update Survey years. However, both the Survey and the Decennial report median household income for the prior year. How is the income estimate calculated? The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates total personal income for the County annually. This value is divided by the number of households in the County to equal average household income. The annual change or percent increase in average household incomes is one of the two percentage changes used in generating the income estimate. The other is the percentage change in the Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) for the Washington-Baltimore CMSA. The average of these two changes has proven to be a good estimate of the change in median household incomes.
