- The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Grant Fund was established to encourage preservation activities in the County, and to promote increased awareness of, and community involvement in, all types of preservation projects. The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) recently awarded the 2009 grants. There were 22 applications from 15 organizations for various projects around the county. The request for grants totaled $60,440 and there is $38,000 in the 2009 fund. The HPC awarded grants to 16 of the proposed projects and the average grant amount was $2,375. Some of the projects funded include web site enhancements, signage, walking tour brochures, exhibits, maps, and more. Deadline for 2010 grants is Sept. 20, 2009.

The Falkland Apartments (1936-38) has now been designated as a Historic site by the Planning Board in March 2009, after being the subject of an Amendment to the Master Plan for Historic Preservation. The Planning Board evaluated this resource on September 4, 2008 following a July 10 public hearing. The Planning Board’s recommendation was transmitted to the County Executive and County Council on November 26, 2008.

Historic preservation design guidelines are available to assist owners of historic properties in the development of their project plans.
- Wild Acres (Grosvenor Estate), 5400 Grosvenor Lane, Bethesda (#30/15), has been designated as a Historic Site by the Planning Board, after being the subject of an Amendment to the Master Plan for Historic Preservation. The Planning Board evaluated this resource and recommends in favor of desgnation. This recommendation was transmitted to the County Executive and County Council on September 12, 2008.
- As we begin work on our 2009-2011 Growth Policy recommendations, the Planning Board has launched a new speaker series to address how to encourage respect of the natural environment in the design of buildings, spaces and streets to create great places with better connections.
