Highlights - Theme Two: Commercial and Institutional Centers

Vision
This Plan recommends that the commercial centers be upgraded to enhance and serve the needs of local residents and those visiting the area.

Issues

  • Commercial Revitalization

  • Transition Uses

  • Highlights
A healthy center is the heart of a healthy community. East Silver Spring residents value local businesses in their community and much of their daily shopping can be done in the immediate neighborhood. The map shows commercial centers for East Silver Spring. Recommendations to improve the overall economic health of commercial centers are an important focus of this Plan.

    Recommendations

  • Revitalize the commercial centers of East Silver Spring to ensure they are safe, community-serving, successful, convenient and attractive.
  • Apply a new Commercial Revitalization Overlay Zone for the Flower Village and Clifton Park Crossroads commercial centers. The zone would provide for site plan review and permit flexibility in parking standards.
  • Form an interjurisdictional task force with the City of Takoma Park and Prince George's County to coordinate commercial revitalization and other improvements.
  • Support revitalization of commercial centers along University Boulevard by providing streetscaping that reflects the international character of many area businesses, in coordination with various business and community organizations.
  • Contact the Silver Spring/Takoma Park Team
