Town of Kensington and Vicinity Sector Plan Update

The Montgomery County Planning Department has begun a comprehensive update of the 1978 Town of Kensington and Vicinity Sector Plan. The update will look closely at six major issues:

  • land uses
  • zones
  • design
  • transportation
  • the environment
  • community facilities such as schools, libraries, police and fire stations.

Kensington Sector Plan

Kensington Sector Plan Cover - May 2009 Download the Planning Board draft of the Kensington Sector Plan. (pdf, 6 MB) The County Council will schedule a public hearing and worksessions before finalizing the plan.

The updated plan will articulate the Kensington communities’ vision and guide the area’s physical development over a 20-year period. The Kensington Sector Plan area includes the incorporated Town of Kensington and three adjacent areas: the West Howard antiques district, the Ken-Gar community north of the CSX railroad tracks and the small commercial district at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and University Boulevard.

Appendix 5: Environmental Resources
Analysis of area watersheds, water resources, stormwater management, impervious cover, water and sewer, carbon emissions, and alternative energy options

Appendix 6: Transportation Analysis
Supporting analysis for the Plan’s recommendations for travel demand management, transit, street network, and bicycle and pedestrian systems, including an analysis of the transportation and land use balance
